SITUATION:

The Royal Bank of Scotland, founded in 1727, is now a leading global bank. The headquarters in Edinburgh sees thousands walk through its reception every year, and the area required an extensive renovation. ARDEX products and specification team were selected for the project. The project was not short on complexity – grade 2 listed tiles were under the previously carpeted flooring, and these had to remain in place and intact. This meant that the historic tiles had to be levelled with a levelling compound that could go over this substrate to create an even surface for the next stage of the installation, but not damage the existing tiles.

CHALLENGES:

  • Historic floor tiles had to be preserved
  • Floor had to be completed quickly to minimise disruption to RBS customers
  • Granite tiles were selected for the floor

SOLUTION:

To protect the grade 2 listed tiles, and to ensure that further renovations in the future could be more straightforward, the ARDEX DS 20 Decoupling Mat was used to provide a tileable surface, protecting and separating the historic tiles from the new tiles to be installed. The Decoupling Mat is also designed to withstand the high level of traffic that would be passing over the reception floor upon completion.

Adrian Ashby, Business Development Manager at ARDEX, said, “The fastdrying properties of several ARDEX products were especially important due to the strict timeframe of the project… For example, ARDEX X 32 Rapid Drying Natural Stone Wall and Floor Tile Adhesive was a key product for this renovation. The adhesive is rapid-drying to the extent that it can be walked on and grouted in as little as three hours after fixing.”

Ashby continued, “ARDEX X 32 was also the only product capable of dealing with the thickness and heaviness of the granite slabs, and the fact that it is designed for fixing moisture sensitive natural stone tiles meant that it was perfect for these tiles, which are susceptible to moisture and staining. ARDEX MG Grout was also used for this reason, as it virtually eliminates risk of water staining, or ‘picture framing’, on tile edges.”

Throughout the completion of this project, the innovative properties of ARDEX products were crucial in achieving the highest quality renovation.

BBVA is the second most important bank in Spain. Their new headquarters buildings has been built in the North of Madrid during 2015 and 2016

CHALLENGES:

The Ardex/Seire consisted in the coating with an anti-slip solution of all the parking areas bellow the buildings. The solution must be anti-slip and very durable as thousands of cars were expected every day. The flooring needed smooth surfaces what was difficult as the concrete was very uneven.

SOLUTION:

The first step was to levell the concrete using ARDEX K14 primed with ARDEX P51. Due to its Ardurapid® effect included in the formula of ARDEX K14, next day the smoothed floor was able to be coated with Seire’s epoxy resins. The protection of the floor begun with the use of SEIREGROSSPRIMER as a primer and first coat of the multilayer epoxy system. Applied with gummy squeegee, just after the application, SEIREGROSSPRIMER is sandblinded building up an strong and durable solution, perfect for the high traffic expected. After brooming and vacuuming the excess of sand, the construction of the protection sytem follows with the use of SEIREPOX MULTICAPA (100% solids epoxy resin specially designed for multilayer systems) wich coaver the sand encreasing thickness. The SEIREPOX MULTILAYER is sandblinded again as in the former step. The system finish applying a new coat of SEIREPOX MULTICAPA which seal the surface.

Renovation of The historic Dahlerup Warehouse at Langelinie Harbour. Replacing 800 m2 of cast iron, wetroom membrane and concrete on loading ramps.

It is not every day for Danish floor companies to embark on the renovation of 800 m2 outdoor loading ramps in a protected historic building in the middle of one of Copenhagen’s most densely populated tourist districts. Nevertheless, that is what CF Gulve did at Dahlerup’s Warehouse at Langelinie.

CHALLENGES:

“The salty and wet marine environment had soared to the outside of the warehouse’s outdoor loading ramps that moisture had penetrated into the underlying basement. Therefore, there was no way without replacing the casting dust, wet room membrane and concrete layers, “explains Carsten Frost, CF Holder. He continues:
“A renovation of this character poses special requirements. It’s a very extensive and heavy work to renovate the loading ramps, and partly in the middle of a mixed neighborhood with both housing and occupation. We would like to minimize the annoyance of the environment, so we used low noise machines and fast cements from ARDEX with dry-time warranty and use ARDEX’s technical know-how.“

SOLUTION:

The underlying wet room membrane and the concrete layer below had to be knocked off and replaced. Here CF Floors used the ARDEX A 38 MIX and ARDEX K 301, which delivers a dry-time guarantee, and delivers a close and durable finish, to avoid moisture damage once again.

“24 hours after the cement is applied, they are completely dry and we can move on. This makes it easy to plan the process, because we are sure that the drying time does not offer unpleasant surprises. In addition, these cements are particularly good for the tough outdoor environment at the port, because they can withstand the moisture and salt, “says Carsten Frost, who has made the solution in consultation with ARDEX’s consultant Allan Pedersen.

CF Gulve used more than 45 tonnes of ARDEX A 38 MIX and ARDEX K 301 on the project.

Teva Pharmaceuticals Ireland specialises in the development, production and marketing of generic and proprietary branded pharmaceuticals. It also specialises in active pharmaceutical ingredients and is a part of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, the world’s leading generic pharmaceutical company. ARDEX Ireland were delighted to work alongside Teva Pharmaceuticals Ireland in the refurbishment of their HQ in Waterford. The finished floor coverings that were used were Polyflor omega EC and Gerflor Mipolam 500.

CHALLENGES:

Fast Track Project that had variable conditions on site from warm to cold. Looking for a cost effective system to ensure the finished floor would perform to its optimum.

SOLUTION:

A specification was done with a full ARDEX system put forward which included waterproofing, priming and Smoothing and Leveling. The 4000m2 project was waterproofed using ARDEX WPM300 which is a water based epoxy polyamide membrane this acts as an effective moisture vapour suppressant, we then used ARDEX P82 as our primer and ARDEX K39 as the smoothing and leveling compound which was selected due to the extra open time and workability.

ARDEX PRODUCTS FEATURED

ARDEX K 39: This high flow, levelling and smoothing compound provides extended workability. This market leading product has a workable wet edge of up to 40 minutes. With its extended wet edge, fresh applications of ARDEX K 39 can be easily smoothed into existing pre-applied material for up to 40 minutes after application, making it ideal for complicated areas, adjoining rooms and large areas where pumping is required. Furthermore, the use of ARDEX K 39 eliminates the need to ‘rub down’ any surfaces.

ARDEX P 82: This is a solvent-free, non-flammable two part primer for use on all dense impervious surfaces, including hard asphalt and rigid metal sub-floors. It has been designed for priming smooth and impervious surface such as concrete, terrazzo, glazed ceramics, quarry tiles, metal and sound paint coatings
ARDEX WPM 300: is a two component water based epoxy polyamide membrane/barrier coating. It can be applied to damp surfaces; will prevent rising damp and formation of efflorescence. It is also water based so is safe to use in sensitive locations and meets the benchmark for VOC.

Verallia, a world leader in glass, wine and spirits packaging, produces more than 25 billion bottles and glass jars each year for its more than 10,000 customers in 46 countries around the world.

CHALLENGES:

When producing glass bottles and jars lots of them broken and small glass pieces and glass sand is spread all over the floor. That glass sand is very aggressive to flooring and so a very resistant flooring was needed to refurbish the factory floors. Another challenge was that the floor must be very smooth and anti-slip. The job was done by areas in order not to disturb the normal activity of the factory.

SOLUTION:

Taking into account all the customer’s needs, the solution selected was to install an ARDEX R70P flooring. ARDEX R70P is a self-levelling polyurethane(pu)-cement mortar with a high mechanical (compressive strength> 45 N/mm2) and wear resistance (Abrasion resistance: Classified ‘Special Duty’ under BS 8204:Part 2: 2002(9)) which, although being very smooth, is absolutely anti-slip (pendulus test values >45). After mechanical substrate preparation according Ardex Application Guide, the floor was primed with ARDEX R3E moisture tolerant 100% solids epoxy primer. Once the primer was cured (approx. 8 h) 4 mm of ARDEX R70P were applied in one operation. This system was selected, in addition to its resistance, by its speed of application compared to the epoxy multilayer systems.

Raffles City is going through re-roofing works for its entire Reinforced Concrete planters and flat roofs using ARDEX WPM 116 and WPM 160, two layers torched applied waterproofing membrane. The RC rooftop helipad is a critical area as any hacking on the RC slab to lay new waterproofing membranes might cause leakage to the restaurant below. The landing zone lightning built into the RC slab make the detailing works for installing new membranes difficult and tedious.

CHALLENGES:

Reinforced Concrete Rooftop Helipad Waterproofing (570m2)

  • Short completion day (5 days including surface preparation)
  • Exposed to weather environment
  • Existing commercial environment with restaurant right below, so required to minimize inconvenience caused for customers and tenants while conducting works
  • Heavy duty wear and abrasion resistance for helicopter landing
