CHALLENGE
  • One floor, 12,000 sq. ft.
  • Only 8 days to prep, prime, pour and color
  • 12,000 gallons of antifreeze dumped out of a roof A/C unit throughout the casino,
requiring considerable rinsing and mechanical prep of the concrete
PROBLEM
The Meadows Racetrack in Washington, PA was awarded a state gaming license to build and
operate  a new slots casino. The casino contractor LP Cimenelli hired Seman Flooring to create
a custom designed concrete floor (12,000 sq. ft.) that would be the centerpiece of the casino.
There were leveling issues where the floor was out of an acceptable plane by as much ˝” in places.
The start of the project was delayed due to an antifreeze leak from the roof air conditioning units which required cleaning and mechanical removal from the concrete substrate prior to the designer concrete
floor installation.

In addition, several cracks had formed in the concrete and there was now just 7 days remaining to
prep, prime, pour and color the floor.

SOLUTION
Bob Seman with assistance from his color expert, Bryan Moore of Designer Concrete Floors,
tediously produced multiple samples of  ARDEX SD-T® Self-Drying, Self-Leveling Concrete
Topping with an acid stain and various sealers until an exact color and design pattern was
agreed upon by the architect, contractor and casino management. ARDEX SD-T Self-Drying,
Self-Leveling Concrete Topping was chosen, because of its fast-track, high-strength attributes
and its ability to maintain color uniformity.

Bob worked with the architects to weave the cracks that appeared in the concrete substrate
into the actual floor design to minimize their appearance. Once the design integrated the cracks to
the satisfaction of the architects, the cracks were treated with ARDEX EP 2000TM Epoxy Sealer.
Control joints were also placed over the cracks and filled with ARDEX Flex CaulkTM in
coordinating colors.

ARDEX Sales Professional Craig Dahl and ARDEX Technical Director Seth Pevarnik assisted
Seman Flooring with technical issues and recommendations throughout the  project.

Working late into the night and on weekends the entire job of preparing the substrate, patching,
installing the ARDEX SD-T, staining and sealing was completed in just 5 days! Due to great team
work between an ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® Installer and the ARDEX Rapid Response teams,
the Pittsburgh Region’s first casino had a beautiful showpiece floor done on time
and on-budget despite many complicated obstacles.
